 Offensive Droughts Spell Trouble for Women’s Hoops at Tech

Women’s hoops got a 24-point performance from the bench, but fell 69-52 to the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles on the road Thursday.

The Eagles had two players score in double figures, led by Veronica Charles, who had 14 points and five assists. Melissa Secchiaroli added 10 points and Sophie Baydanov added seven points and three steals.

The Morehead State defense caused its share of mistakes in Thursday’s game, forcing 14 Tennessee Tech turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 18 points on the other end of the floor. Baydanov’s three steals led the way individually for the Eagles.

The Eagles return to Johnson Arena Saturday for a 1:00 PM matinee against Southeast Missouri. 

How It Happened

Morehead State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 21-10 at the end of the first quarter.

The Eagles continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 37-20 halftime deficit.

Tennessee Tech continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 42-20 advantage before Morehead State went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a three from Valentina Saric, to trim its deficit to 42-26 with 6:03 to go in the third. Tennessee Tech countered and stretched its lead to 55-34 heading into the fourth. Morehead State knocked down four three-pointers in the quarter to score 12 of its 14 total points.

Morehead State narrowed its deficit to 63-43 before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Secchiaroli’s three, to shrink the deficit to 63-48 with 3:41 to go in the contest. Tennessee Tech responded and outscored the Eagles the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 69-52. Morehead State took advantage of five Tennessee Tech turnovers in the quarter, scoring seven points off of those takeaways.
