Heads up Carter County for an Olive Hill traffic change … The intersection at Tygart Street, Railroad Street, and KY 986 at Cross Street and the bridge downtown has been made a four-way stop. New stop signs are in place. And, KY 986 now follows Tygart Street past the fire department and up to the US 60-KY 2 signal.
Basically, it’s part of a street swap downtown to improve state highway system connectivity. (See maps). It’s a bit complicated to put into words, but here goes: In an agreement with the City of Olive Hill, the state has taken over maintenance of Tygart Street as the new KY 986 — this will allow all KY 986 traffic coming into downtown Olive Hill to remain on state highways. Before, because Cross Street is one way, you had to use another city street to get to US 60, etc. So, we were putting state traffic onto city streets we could not help maintain. Now, with Tygart Street (and the fire station service road from US 60) turned into a new section of KY 986, all state highway traffic will remain on a state highway, and we can help keep it blacktopped. And Cross Street has been turned over to the city.
